I have listed below 4 interesting reasons why hill walkers and lovers of the outdoors would find North Roscommonand Leitrim a good location for their next walking holiday:
- You are within easy access (max 30 minute drive) of 3 ofIreland’s National Way-Marked Trails. TheLeitrim Way, The Miners Way& The Historical Trail. The combined length of these trails is almost 120km.
- Carrick-on-Shannon is just 16km from the Miners Way and the Arigna Mining Experience. You also have trail heads in Drumshanbo, Keadue and Boyle.
- Sligo and Roscommon is a Megalithic Tomb hotspot with one of the highest concentrations of Neolithic passage tombs inIreland, the most spectacular of which are Carrowmore and Carrowkeel.
- Benbulben and Knocknarea Mountains are iconic landmarks for the region. Benbulben with its flat top and western end pointed out to the sea. Knocknarea famous for its 60m hilltop cairn Queen Maeve’s Grave. Both mountains have fantastic views over Sligobay.
I am a qualified Mountain Leader. I have been leading walks in Ireland for the last 10 years and I am Chairperson of the Boyle Curlew Walkers. We have 2 walks arranged per month for 2012.
I am a Hill Walking Guide. I am available 7 days a week to take individuals, families and groups on walks into the Irish hills where they can learn to enjoy nature and pick up a few map reading skills, learn about flora and fauna as well as weather, geology and local history and mythology.
My focus for the next year will be to get Leitrim, North Roscommon and Sligo to be a recognised hill walking area.
